LAWRENCE ZUKOF

I have enjoyed weekly recorder lessons with Larry for over six years; and, for almost as long, I have been part of ensembles he has led and coached. Larry is a wonderfully talented musician who has deep knowledge and experience with the repertoire. His love of the recorder is inspiring, as is his interest in music of all eras. I have been in Larry's ensembles ranging from 3-10 members, and in age from mid 70's (like me, or older) to high school and occasionally even grade school students. We play music from the Renaissance and Baroque to the 21st century.

Larry is adept at responding to individual players' musical needs, and patient in accommodating students of varying abilities. Watching him instruct and teach is as pleasant as it is informative. Larry is a skilled performer, an encouraging teacher, and an informed leader. His enjoyment of the recorder, the music, and his students is palpable and infectious. They just do not come better than Larry, and it is with real pleasure and admiration that I write this short appreciation.

I have been an adult student of Larry Zukof for many years. I have a background in orchestral performance, private lessons and ensemble playing that goes back 4 decades and I can say with certainty that Larry is the best I have ever had. He is patient, flexible, empathic and highly accomplished. With regard to recorder music, he has an enormous repertoire of music that spans 8 centuries of Western music. He has both music theory and music history thoroughly integrated into his lessons. He is a master performer on the recorder but he is no show off. He has public composure and quiet modesty. He has not forgotten what it is to be a student and plays frequently on the viola da gamba and violin which he picked as an adult. Whoever has the good fortune to have him as an instructor has really hit the lottery!
